Changes at Modernism Magazine

By Sandy McLendon

Cara Greenberg and Joe Kunkel, Publisher, at Arne Jacobsen's SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.

Hail, But Hardly Farewell

The woman who coined the phrase “Mid-Century Modern” has stepped down as Editor-In-Chief of Modernism magazine.

Cara Greenberg, author of the seminal 1984 book that named and quantified the Mid-Century field for its aficionados, announced recently that she is leaving her post. Under her direction, Modernism evolved from a specialized collector’s publication to a highly regarded design magazine. Three-and-a-half years ago, Modernism was a distant second in circulation to Echoes; as a result of Greenberg’s efforts, it has outlasted Echoes, doubled its circulation, and achieved profitability. There is no comparison between today’s Modernism and issues produced before her tenure; the magazine’s editorial and technical standards have been vastly improved.

Fans of Cara Greenberg will be relieved to know that she continues as Contributing Editor at both Metropolitan Home and Art + Auction. She will continue to contribute to other publications as a free-lance writer on design, architecture, collecting and travel; her work has appeared in The New York Times and Good Housekeeping, as well as many other magazines and newspapers, including Elle Décor, House Beautiful, and Better Homes & Gardens.

The Fall issue of Modernism, released on September 15th, is the final one edited by Greenberg. In a recent statement, she described the issue as her “swan song” at the magazine, mentioning an article on transparent furniture and a feature on the remodeling of a 1970’s kitchen.

All of us here at Jetsetmodern wish Cara Greenberg the very best, and we’re looking forward to much more on Mid-Century design from her, very soon.

Andrea Truppin, Editor-in-Chief, Modernism Magazine

Modernism Names New Editor

The Winter issue of Modernism magazine will have the name of a new Editor-In-Chief on its masthead - that of Andrea Truppin, recently appointed to the post by the magazine’s Publisher, David Rago.

Truppin, who grew up with modernist furnishings, has been writing about design for twenty years. Her credits include articles for The New York Times, Architecture, Architectural Record, and Architectural Digest. For several years, she was a Senior Editor at Interiors magazine, later becoming a contributor. She is also the author of a notable, much-discussed article on the use of sound in the films of the late Belorussian director, Andrei Tarkovsky.

Truppin has not yet announced her editorial plans for Modernism, but she is known to have an interest in increasing the number of house features seen in the magazine’s pages. She has asked Jetsetmodern Publisher Joe Kunkel, and Editor Sandy McLendon (author of this article) to contribute to the magazine, as well.

Readers of Modernism can look forward to some changes, but it is clear that Andrea Truppin also wants to give the magazine’s readers more of what they enjoy most, and that she has the expertise needed to accomplish that goal.

Jetsetmodern readers who would like to keep abreast of what’s happening at Modernism can visit the magazine’s Website, www.modernismmagazine.com. Information on each issue’s contents, as well as subscription information, is available.
