PIERRE KOENIG 1926-2004

It seems like only yesterday that we were working with Pierre Koenig on the Jetsetmodern article you're about to see. Our Publisher, Joe Kunkel, contacted him in 1999 to request an interview, a request Koenig cheerfully granted. Joe remembers his wonderment that the architect of so many iconic Modernist houses was so approachable.

Stemming from his personal interest in Koenig's career and knowing that many people would also enjoy learning more, Joe had the idea that we should do an article on Koenig's work. Although Jetsetmodern was not yet a magazine, we were generously given cooperation, as well as permission to reproduce photographs from Koenig's files. After his review of the article, Pierre Koenig paid Jetsetmodern the great compliment of linking to the article from his own Website, a privilege we've enjoyed since September 2000. Koenig was very receptive to meeting Joe and his father while visiting LA in May 2002 on a self-guided tour of modern architecture. Koenig invited them into his home and office graciously.

For those who wish to make contributions in memory of Pierre Koenig, the family suggests that donations be made to the Pierre Koenig Endowment, USC School of Architecture, Watt Hall 203, University Park, Los Angeles, CA 90089-0291.

In tribute to the genius who designed Case Study Houses 21 and 22, as well as many others you've seen in countless photographs, books, and movies, we invite you to read about Pierre Koenig's designs and career here:
