Leaking Milk
|
Most mothers start to leak on one side when their baby is nursing on the other side. They may also leak when it is time for a feeding. Many things may trigger leaking, such as a crying baby, thinking of the baby, or seeing the baby. Although, some mothers have an ample supply but never leak.
Leaking in the early months is more common, although moms can leak for several months. When you leak, you can slow or stop the leaking by applying pressure directly on the nipples. Wear nursing pads to catch the milk. Some nursing pads are washable and reusable, others are disposable. Pads with plastic linings do not allow air to get to the nipple, which can lead to soreness. Breastfeed or express more often by encouraging the baby at the breast or express your milk when you feel full. When sleeping, you might lay a crib liner or thick towel under your chest area to help catch leaks. You should have an extra gown available in case you need to change during the night.
